How Routine Skincare Affects Well-Being And Quality Of Life

Skincare routines have significantly evolved over the decades. From simple face powders and cold creams in the 1930s and 1940s, most skincare regimens now include various products. Cleansers, toners, exfoliators, masks, serums, moisturisers, sunscreens, and skin supplements are only some of the different beauty products commonly included in people’s skincare routine.

As an increasing number of people become aware of the importance of skin health, routine skincare is becoming more and more commonplace. However, aside from improving your skin health, did you know that having a skincare routine can positively affect your quality of life? Several scientific studies have shown a connection between having healthy skin and positive well-being. Read on to find out how routine skincare can impact the other aspects of your life.

The Effectiveness of a Skincare Routine in Enhancing Skin Health

Before delving into the benefits of routine skincare to one’s well-being and quality of life, it is first necessary to discuss whether or not having a consistent beauty regimen is effective at enhancing skin health. The cosmetic industry often promotes having a skincare routine, and there is a good, scientifically-proven reason why this is so.

In a study published in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology, researchers found that using a relevant daily skincare routine can demonstrate visible skin benefits over a short period. In the study, 49 women were divided into two groups and observed for four weeks.

The first group followed the use of a skincare routine consisting of several beauty products, such as cleanser, toner, serum, eye cream, and day and night cream. On the other hand, the second group was instructed to use only two skincare products: cleanser and day cream.

By the end of the four weeks, the results showed that those women who followed an advanced skincare routine consisting of multiple beauty products outperformed those who used only two products in terms of enhancing superficial hydration, deep hydration, melanin heterogeneity, mean pore size, skin roughness, deep wrinkles, and skin brightness.

In another research published in the Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery – Global Open, several reports and studies were compiled to summarise the proven benefits of having an at-home skincare regimen to improve skin appearance.

In the previous research, the researchers concluded that regular use of clinically proven beauty products formulated with the right ingredients could help increase and lengthen the benefits of skincare treatments in terms of addressing specific skin concerns, such as skin sensitivity, wrinkling, loss of elasticity, blemishes, dullness, and uneven pigmentation.

The Link Between Skincare and Improved Well-Being

Aside from enhancing skin appearance, routine skincare can also help boost your quality of life. Several studies were already conducted to determine whether or not there is indeed a link between having a skincare regimen and improved well-being.

One notable study on this subject was published in MDPI Journals in 2020. In the said study, a total of 220 women were observed for 28 days to assess whether or not a facial skincare routine using products formulated to enhance skin elasticity, hydration, and firmness, and to correct sun and age-related skin colour can impact their quality of life.

The women in the study were classified into three groups: the first group included 89 new mothers from Australia, the second group or the national representative sample consisted of 91 women from Australia. In contrast, the third group was a different test group of 40 young cosmetic users from China. These women were instructed to follow a 28-day skincare routine to determine if it would affect their well-being. This assessment was done using the Farage Quality of Life (QoL) Measure for Consumer Products with an added Skin Care Module.

By the end of the 28 days, both the first and the second groups showed significant improvements in their sense of empowerment, self-esteem, and happiness. The first group notably showed substantial improvements in their well-being, specifically their self-image and self-competence. The other test group from China also manifested similar improvements. On the other hand, the second group showed developments in their energy and vitality.

Overall, the study, as mentioned earlier, found that having an efficacious skincare routine can positively affect the quality of life of consumers. A similar conclusion was arrived at by the study conducted by skincare brand Rodan + Fields, wherein 30 acne-prone women between the ages of 18 and 45 were asked to follow a skincare regimen consisting of antioxidants, prebiotics, electrolytes, and sunscreen for eight weeks to identify its effects on their mental health.

The study results found that following the skincare routine helped the women reduce their stress hormone cortisol by approximately 83% and increase their self-confidence. The participants felt more comfortable, confident, and less stressed about their appearance after embarking on the beauty regimen.

Role Of Supplements In Skincare

Besides topical skincare products, taking oral skin supplements play a vital role and can also greatly help in improving your overall skin health. At Dr Ora, we specialise in oral skin supplements that improve your skin from within. For example, our Aura White Ultra helps to whiten and brighten your skin and even acts as an oral sunscreen to prevent the formation of melanin and to protect your skin from harmful UV damage.

While topical skincare products target specific areas such as your face, skin supplements improve your skin health from within by providing specific nutrients that allow your body to rejuvenate and heal itself, regardless of what your skin type is.

As the term suggests, oral skin products are meant to supplement your diet and topical products. This tripartite approach would ensure that your skin gets the best, and with a healthy skin, comes reduced stress and renewed confidence.

Conclusion

Having a skincare routine is beneficial to your skin health and your overall quality of life. This has already been confirmed and proven by scientific studies.
