Travel Skincare Habits You Should Definitely Pick Up

Travelling can throw your beauty routine out of whack, but keeping up good skincare habits can protect your skin while you jetset around the world. Here’s how.

It can be hard to stay on top of your skincare game when you’re travelling. It may seem like you need to pack all your regular skincare products so that you can maintain your beauty routine, but you don’t have to bring your entire dressing table or bathroom cabinet with you on holiday. A few key products like a strong moisturiser (to combat the dry air in the plane) and sunscreen with high SPF (especially if you’re going to tropical countries), as well as good skincare habits will get you through your holiday.

Whether you prefer to go minimal or like to be well prepared, there are some tips that will help your skin survive the dirty and dry cabin air, insufficient sleep, and even travel-induced stress.

1. Don't wear a sheet mask when flying

Yes, this goes against everything you might have heard, but it’s actually not worth wearing a sheet mask when on the plane, because the significantly lower humidity in the plane will only dry out your mask. Instead, wear the mask at home before flying, and top it off with some facial oil to seal in more moisture before you get on your flight.

2. Wear sunscreen even on the plane

This is one thing you should never skip, of course. But even when you’re in the plane, those UV rays can get to you through the windows. And regardless of where you are travelling to, be sure to always wear sunscreen even on rainy or cloudy days. A broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 50 will have you well covered, such as Dr. Ora’s Aura White Sun Spray, which comes with whitening properties as well.

3. Skip the long-lasting makeup when flying

It might be tempting to wear makeup that can last the entire flight so that you will arrive at your destination looking on fleek. But almost all experts warn against this. It’s especially important to skip long-lasting lipstick on a flight, as it “will completely dry your lips out.” Instead, Dalton-Brush says using a hydrating lip oil rich in fatty acids is the way to go.

4. Consider the climate of your destination

It helps to consider where you’re going when packing your travel beauty stash. If it’s a warm and humid destination, make sure your skincare products are non-comedogenic so they won’t clog up your pores and lead to breakouts. If you’re going someplace colder and drier, definitely don’t forget to bring a bottle or two of good moisturiser. You don’t want your lips and skin to become so dry they crack!

5. Don't rely on just makeup wipes

You might skip the makeup removing oil just to create more space in your toiletries bag, but makeup wipes aren’t enough to remove makeup entirely. Even if you are going to use cleansing makeup wipes, be sure to follow up with a gentle hydrating cleanser for a thorough removal of all the oil and dirt in your skin.

6. Don't use a bunch of different and heavy products

Just because you’re away from home doesn’t mean you need to intensify your skincare routine. Many women try to compensate for not having their regular skincare products and beauty rituals by loading their faces with more products. When travelling, keep your skincare routine minimal instead of using too many products and causing your skin to react unpleasantly. Heavy oils and serums can counter-effectively clog up your pores and cause acne.

7. Whip out a jade roller

The secret to in-flight skin care might actually be a jade roller. It’s convenient and handy and doesn’t take up much space in a carry-on bag. A jade roller can help to prevent puffiness in your face as it stimulates blood circulation. Use it after applying your moisturiser and eye cream. It can also help to promote relaxation when you fly.
